ICONA XXI

“Debray’s original phrase that hammers me said something like: “Words guide us forward and images guide us backward”. And although one could deduce from this idea a conservative reading of images that look to the past in search of a symbolic model and social acceptance, I think it rather alludes to the use of images by the power  as an instrument to cohere and establish community and command. But I agree that the primacy of images in contemporaneity is given by their use by power as guardians of imaginaries that repeat worlds, or orient them towards the maintenance of those who have been privileged here. Even when images are produced by the multitude, THOSE WHO MANAGE THE MACHINE AND THE LENS CONTINUE TO GUIDE.

It is true that today images flood everything and that (for the moment) on the screens they do not smell or touch us. It is true that if we were calmly through the images we see and are shared with us on a daily basis, we would see how most of them help us to reinforce an identity model to be. My voice would not tremble when I say that the contemporary visual imaginary is one of the most effective mechanisms of symbolic construction, unprecedented in the history of mankind. Never before have we coexisted with so many images of the world and images of ourselves, transforming the digital into an amazing “industry of the self”, in all possible forms of self-exhibition in real time.

So obvious, and we must remember it. That imaginaries are tools of power and allow the creation of identity and EXPECTATIONS POINTED IN THE AFFECTIVE AND IN CONNECTIVITY; that they are artificial and are supported by life models that seek to normalize themselves as the desirable and “chosen” ones, when they are really “induced”.
